Sven Coop 5.0: Development Progress

The release of Sven Coop 5.0 is just around the corner. The developers have shared information about the changes coming in the new version of the game, and judging by the description, it is going to turn out great. The SC team fell a bit behind schedule, but now that summer is over, work is in full swing.
Sven Coop 5.0 will be a truly huge update: it is now a standalone game rather than a Half-Life mod, and it will be distributed for free via Steam. The game will come in three packages:

  1. Sven Coop itself, for players. This includes the game client for playing on servers.
  2. An SDK for developers, which includes the tools needed to create maps and more.
  3. Server files, for running your own server.

After the release, the developers will also keep working hard on the game.

Upcoming features of Sven Coop 5.0

The AngelScript scripting language. It is a powerful scripting language with a syntax based on C/C++. If you know C/C++, javascript or PHP well, you will be able to pick up AngelScript easily. Scripting will let you write plugins and map scripts that greatly extend the gameplay and make it more varied.

New features for mappers

Mappers can now create much bigger maps, roughly 1000 times bigger. Weapons and ammo can now be carried over when moving to another level, which is perfect for campaigns made up of several maps.

AngelScript will let mappers change practically any aspect of the game. This means you can apply AngelScript to map entities and NPCs, or introduce new gameplay. And all of this can be done by the mapper alone, without the help of separate mods such as AmxModX.
Player data, and not only player data, can be stored in an SQLite database.

Server plugins

Sven Coop will have its own set of admin tools. Some of them will be provided by the developers, but you can also write your own plugin in AngelScript. If a server has never used AmxModX, the switch to AngelScript will be very easy.
The admin functions are well integrated with the game, which will make it possible to create very interesting and useful plugins.

Model scaling

NPCs can now be scaled right during the game. AI, hitboxes, eye positions, movement speed, jump height and other parameters will be recalculated automatically.
If you make NPCs big, they will move faster and be able to jump down from greater heights (they are giants, after all). If you make NPCs small, they will hide behind cover, be able to move through narrow corridors and move more slowly. This feature will make the gameplay more
exciting and varied.

Difficulty levels and entity attribute modification

The developers are currently working on a system for modifying player and NPC parameters. They have cut some functions out of the Half-Life system.

While updating the system, the developers added new values to existing entities (mostly for NPCs). Each NPC or weapon can have its own damage values, which will greatly expand the gameplay. For example:

  • A wave survival or object defense mode, where the difficulty increases with each new wave. For example, like in Base Defence.
  • Weapon classes. Players of a certain class spawn with the same weapons as their teammates, but with different damage or accuracy values.
  • Players can level up, which increases the damage they deal or their maximum health.

These are far from all the changes in Sven Coop 5.0; the developers keep publishing them on their website - http://www.svencoop.com/
