Lowering your ping in Half-Life

Everyone has wondered about ping at some point. What it depends on and how to affect it using only Half-Life config settings, without changing your ISP, is explained below.

So, what is ping in Half-Life? Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms); in other words, it's the time it takes for a signal from your computer to reach the server and come back.

Ping mainly depends on the quality of your internet connection, the power of your computer and how loaded its CPU is.

Lowering your ping in Half-Life

To check your ping in the game, just press TAB and look up your ping value in the scoreboard; the lower it is, the better, of course.

How to lower your ping in the game?

First, open the console with ~
You can also create a userconfig.cfg file in the valve folder of the game and add the values you need with Notepad

Commands for lowering your ping in the game

cl_cmdbackup - the number of packets sent to the server per second. The lower the value, the lower the ping, but the quality of the game may drop. Optimal: cl_cmdbackup 2

cl_cmdrate - the rate at which commands are sent to the server. The most optimal value for playing over a modem is 20-30. Lower value, lower ping

cl_download_ingame - downloading models and logos in the game. A value of 0 means lower ping. If you don't need to download logos, set it to 0; on our servers they're disabled altogether.

cl_lw - where weapon actions (sounds, animation...) are processed. The recommended value is 1: ping will be lower and there will be no sound delay where a player shoots first and only then hears the sound.

cl_resend - if the previous packet didn't arrive, this sets the time after which it will be resent. Optimal value: cl_resend 4

cl_updaterate - the rate at which game information is updated. Optimal value: cl_updaterate 20

mp_decals - the number of effects visible at the same time. To reduce lag, it's better to set it to 0. The default value is 50

cl_download_ingame - downloading files right in the game. Better to leave it at 1

I also advise you to experiment, because with identical settings ping can behave differently for different players: some will get spikes, for some it'll drop a lot, and for some it may not drop at all.
