Operation Black Mesa in development

Operation Black Mesa is a remake of the 1999 game Half-Life: Opposing Force on the Source engine. This mod has nothing to do with Black Mesa.
Operation Black Mesa is being developed by Tripmine Studios. According to the project lead, the game will come out in the first quarter of 2014, but it will only be the multiplayer version (DeathMatch, Team Deathmatch and possibly Capture The Flag). It's not yet known when the single player will be released.

The original Half-Life: Opposing Force came out way back in 1999, and its events unfold in parallel with those of Half-Life 1. The main character is Corporal Adrian Shephard of the HECU. The HECU special unit's mission is to eliminate the alien threat and all Black Mesa personnel, Gordon Freeman included. Operation Black Mesa is supposed to feature new characters that weren't in Black Mesa.

Originally, Valve Software planned to port the first Half-Life series to the Source engine, but after Half-Life: Source came out, Tripmine Studios decided to take porting the expansion into their own hands.

What to expect from Operation Black Mesa, according to the developers:
  • All 12 chapters of the original (Half-Life: Opposing Force).
  • Player and weapon models pushed to the limits of the Source engine.
  • Multiplayer, including Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch with all the original levels. New voices, sounds and effects that will fully immerse the player in the events taking place at Black Mesa.
  • Map design up to modern game standards.
  • A remixed soundtrack, including expanded music from the original plus new tracks.
  • An expanded single player campaign, with new monsters and levels that weren't in Opposing Force, to fill in the gaps of the original.
  • Scenes that immerse you in the events of Black Mesa.
  • Capture The Flag in multiplayer.

Besides Operation Black Mesa, the studio is developing a remake of Half-Life: Blue Shift called Guard Duty. It's unknown which game will come out first.
