The Team Fortress 2 Classic mod was released yesterday. TF2Classic is a classic version of Team Fortress 2 as it was in 2008-2009, with features of its own. The developers focused on classic modes (such as Capture The Flag), brought back removed modes and implemented ideas that Valve abandoned.
Team Fortress 2 Classic features
No "cosmetics". Valve has added a whole lot of stuff to Team Fortress 2 since the game first came out: hats, effects and so on. TF2Classic doesn't have any of that, and there are no plans for it.
New teams: GRN and YLW. There are only two maps with four teams. Most modes still use BLU and RED.
There's a new, 10th class — the Civilian. He's used in VIP modes, where the Civilian has to be escorted to the end of the map. It's somewhat like the payload mode, only instead of a cart there's a player.
The Civilian only has an umbrella, which he can use to attack and deal a little damage.
New weapons. Some classes have alternative weapons. For example, the Scout has a nail gun, a weapon that was cut from the original Team Fortress 2.
The Demoman has as many as two alternative weapons in the grenade slot: a mine launcher and dynamite. The mine launcher lets you place sticky mines that explode when an enemy runs past. Dynamite is a kind of grenade: it doesn't fly far, but it explodes hard and also replenishes over time. The original TF2 used to have dynamite too, but it was cut.
The Engineer's alternative weapon is the Gauss gun, everyone's favorite from Half-Life. Just like in Half-Life, it has two firing modes: primary and charged, with a spin-up. You can also fly and jump high with it, but a bit differently: you get something like a rocket jump.
Installation
You don't need the original Team Fortress 2 to play.
You probably shouldn't expect the mod to come out on Steam. The developers used the leaked Team Fortress 2 source code. Besides, Valve previously took a dim view of a similar mod, Team Fortress 2008, and removed it from Steam.
